The encoder was equipped with a MAudio Audiofile (aka Midiman) digital audio card. Configuring the the card under Linux required some tweaking, specially since this particular card does not seem to do full duplex playback and recording. Setting up an analog card might be easier, but a digital connection to the studio mixer was necessary due to all kinds of humming noise and grounding problems. If you plan to broadcast only canned music, you can do with an analog card.

alsamixer settings. The digital audio card is labeled IEC958, which is the standard for the SPDIF interface used by most digital audio cards.

Alsamixer doesn't provide VU meters for monitoring the volume getting into the encoder. So an additionall, smaller mixer next to the computer is very useful.
